A new report says Burger King is hurting tropical forests.

The hamburger chain buys a lot of soybeans. It uses them to feed its cows and chickens. The report says the beans are grown on land that used to be rainforest. It says the forests were burned on purpose. They were cleared to make room for soybean farms.

The report was done by Mighty Earth. This group tries to protect the environment. Mighty Earth says more than 1 million acres of forest were cleared in South America in the last few years.

Loss Of Land Has Hurt Many Animals

Jaguars and sloths live in the forests. So do many other animals and plants. They have all been affected by the loss of land.

Mighty Earth gathered evidence to prove the forests had been burned. The group looked at studies. It sent people to visit the farms. It also took photos of the land from above using drones. Drones are small planes. They can be controlled from the ground.

The group says all of the evidence shows forests were burned. Farmers burned the forest to grow soybeans. They grew them for Burger King's suppliers, Cargill and Bunge. These companies grow animal feed. Then they sell it to Burger King.

Critic Says Burger King Has To Do Better

Glenn Hurowitz is the CEO of Mighty Earth. He said Burger King is not doing enough to protect the forests.

Burger King must tell people where their food comes from, he said. If not, people should shop elsewhere.

Mighty Earth's report focuses on Brazil and Bolivia. Both countries are in South America. In Bolivia, forest lands have been cleared. In Brazil, the Cerrado is being cleared. This is a huge grassland area. More than half of the plants in the Cerrado have already been cleared, Mighty Earth says.

Mighty Earth says companies are not doing enough. They must do more to stop the clearing.

Burger King Does Less Than Others

Sharon Smith works for a pro-science group. She said Burger King is one of the world's biggest fast food companies. Unlike other big companies, it does not do much to protect nature, she said. It does less than most of its competitors.

Smith said Burger King needs to do better. It has to stop suppliers from destroying forests, she said.

Cargill responded to the report with a written statement. It said the company wants to decrease forest clearing. It hopes to do so by 2020.
